MODENAS Advances EV Mobility Pilot in Langkawi Through MEV-2 Handover

Langkawi’s position as a strategic tourism island has made it a suitable location for MODENAS to explore the practical use of electric two-wheel mobility through the MEV-2 Rental Proof-of-Concept programme.

The MEV-2 handover session, held on 12 May 2026 in Langkawi, forms part of MODENAS’ wider effort to support electric vehicle adoption, sustainable tourism development and real-world validation of electric motorcycle usage in Malaysia.

The programme involved the handover of MEV-2 units under a Proof-of-Concept arrangement with Honeyzone Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd, together with further engagement involving the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and other strategic stakeholders. The session also brought together representatives from LADA, Majlis Perbandaran Langkawi Bandar Pelancongan (MPLBP), GIATMARA, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), Langsura Geopark Sdn Bhd and Bateriku.

Among the VIPs present were Wan Kamarul Faisal bin Wan Kamardin, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of LADA for Planning and Development; Sharudin bin Hassan from LADA’s Investment and Business Facilitation Division; Muhaimen bin Mazelan, Enforcement Officer from MPLBP; Ahmad Hamdi bin Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of GIATMARA; Dr Abd Hakim Ab Rahim from MGTC’s Sustainability and Mobility division; Zuhri bin Abd Rashid from Langsura Geopark Sdn Bhd; and Syed Ahmad Faiz from Bateriku.

Langkawi was selected because it offers a relevant real-world environment for EV mobility deployment. As a tourism-driven island, Langkawi has active movement between resorts, tourism hubs, local attractions, business areas and community locations. This makes it suitable for testing electric motorcycles in short-distance mobility use cases, including tourism support, rental operations, government agency usage and commercial fleet applications.

Through the MEV-2 Proof-of-Concept, MODENAS aims to better understand product performance, battery reliability and operational efficiency in an actual operating environment. The pilot also allows stakeholders to assess how electric motorcycles can support daily mobility needs while contributing to cleaner and more sustainable transport practices.

The MEV-2 is positioned as a practical electric motorcycle for urban, community and fleet usage. With a claimed range of up to 107km, top speed of 80km/h, onboard charging capability and lithium battery technology, the model is designed to support short-distance commuting and operational movement. Its features, including LED lighting, LCD display, combined braking system and ergonomic design, further support ease of use for riders in daily operations.

For Langkawi, the programme carries wider strategic value. Beyond the handover itself, the pilot supports the idea of positioning the island as a potential EV mobility pilot environment for Malaysia. This includes possible use by tourism operators, government agencies, enforcement bodies, resorts and local mobility providers.

LADA’s involvement is also significant, as the agency plays a key role in Langkawi’s development direction. With the right ecosystem support, Langkawi has the potential to become a reference location for future EV mobility adoption, particularly in tourism-led environments where sustainability, accessibility and operational efficiency are increasingly important.

For MODENAS, the initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its presence in the EV ecosystem while supporting Malaysia’s transition towards cleaner mobility solutions. The programme also provides an opportunity to engage with public agencies, tourism players and mobility partners who can help shape the future of electric two-wheel usage in real operating conditions.

Overall, the MEV-2 handover in Langkawi is not just a product placement exercise. It is an early step towards understanding how electric motorcycles can support sustainable island mobility, tourism operations and future fleet deployment in Malaysia.
